Interventional radiology is one of the most intensively developing fields in medicine today. It is divided into vascular and non-vascular interventions. The field of vascular interventional radiology evolved from diagnostic angiography almost 60 years ago, with Sven Ivar Seldinger (1921-1998) and Charles Theodore Dotter (1920-1985) who played a major role in its development. Parallel, non-vascular techniques were also evolving. The already well-known imaging techniques allow minimally invasive procedures to be performed that previously would have required major surgery or would not have been feasible at all.
