I am not proud of my several Ludwig ancestors who served among the best medical experts in my native town, Pécs. What I feel is gratitude and a strong, continuous will also to heal, to cure - but as a writer. The family arrived there from Moravia and some of them studied medicine in Vienna The most "historical" person in the long medical line is Dr. Johann Ludwig, who had to treat the neck wounds of Count Batthyány who wanted to avoid the humiliation of being hanged. According to the rules those who served from such wounds- could not be hanged, but shot. According to a famous, online available book: The Life and Death of the First Hungarian Prime Minister this young doctor, who - though of German origin - was on the side of the revolt of 1848-1849. Dr. Ludwig married in 1855, his wife was Aloysia Schmidt. They had seven children but lost four of them. Among others "Bettike", whose lovely portrait hangs over my bed, is a masterpiece of Endre Graits, a famous painter of Pécs, who studied in Venice. Bettike was the victim of diphtheria, on a Christmas day, despite all the efforts of her father! Johann?s and Aloysia?s double portrait, a coloured daguerreotype is also deeply honoured in our family, just like the old Johann Ludwig House in Pécs, at the Király street. On its wall, the small Statue of St. John of Nepomuk symbolizes the calling, the noble profession of its owner.
