The aim of this review article is to provide a historical overview of certain immunological and pharmaceutical innovations, highlighting their impact on the treatment of autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In the past decade, significant progress has been made in understanding the background of these diseases and developing treatment options. Biological and targeted synthetic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (b/ts DMARD) have become available.
