Recent studies show that up to 30% of individuals with intellectual disabilities suffer from depression, a rate significantly higher than that of the general population. This review article examines the crucial role of social environment and support in coping with depression of this vulnerable group. It explores how family support, friendships, professional help, and community programs can alleviate depressive symptoms and improve well-being. Particular attention is given to the roles of parents and siblings, the importance of peer support, the effectiveness of multidisciplinary approaches, and the impact of community-based initiatives.
