This study contains two main parts. The first one presents the German historical context of Tillich's work, paving the way for a more comprehensive appreciation of his theological and philosophical contributions. The second one investigates the central topic of fundamental human fears as investigated in his groundbreaking book. This analysis dissects the precise forms of anxiety that are creating these fears. The conclusion outlines potential avenues for future research, discovering how theology, psychology, and ethics intersect to provide insights into the experiences of elderly individuals. There is paid specific attention to the role of these disciplines as they facilitate coping with anxiety and encouraging courage in later life. This study traces the intellectual journey of Paul Tillich, while focusing on his central role in the emerging existential psychology. It presents a historical perspective of Tillich's German roots, later on it discusses his interrelations with key figures such as Manheim, Horkheimer, Adorno, Heidegger, and his move to the US, where he influenced Rollo May and the development of existentialist psychology. The core of this study explores Tillich's ?The Courage to Be" and juxtaposes it with May's ?The Meaning of Anxiety" and ?The Courage to Create", suggesting a collective interpretation. The study also highlights Tillich's influence on figures such as Martin Luther King Jr.. Its conclusion outlines possible avenues of research in existential psychology, gerontology, and the interplay between theology and psychology.  Kulcsszavak: Paul Tillich, Existential Psychology, Rollo May, "The Courage to Be", Anxiety, Creation, Yalom
