The Hungarian National lmmunization Program (NlP) has been in place since the early 1950s, starting with locally manufactured diphtheria-whole cell pertussis-tetanus (DwPT), oral polio and BCG vaccines. As in several other post-communist countries, it is and has been financed from the national budget and is compulsory for all children. Exemptions are only granted for medical reasons. The author describes the development of the NIP and its history until 2023. Presently, children are immunized against 13 infections in Hungary: up to the age of 6 in primary care settings, and between the age of 6 and 14 at school. Coverage is high, near 100% for obligatory vaccines. HpV-g vaccines are also offered within the school program at the age of twelve to both sexes. Their uptake is voluntary and depends on the parents' decision. HPV-9 coverage is between 72 and 83%. All additional EMA registered vaccines are available in Hungary by prescription, with variable coverage. COVID-19 mRNA vaccines were also available for children above five, but their uptake was below 30% for all eligible kids. Vaccine hesitancy plays a minor role, but the activity of the anti-vax movement is of increasing concern.
